How to Play YouTube Videos in the Background on Android Devices

On desktop, YouTube videos keep playing even when minimized, allowing you to multitask. You can use picture-in-picture mode to watch the video while using other apps, or simply listen to the audio in the background.

However, the mobile app behaves differently. Videos stop playing when you switch to another app.

There are ways to listen to YouTube in the background on your phone:

  • YouTube Premium: A paid subscription that offers background playback, along with other perks.
  • Free methods (workarounds): While not officially supported, some free methods exist. These methods may change or be unreliable, so proceed with caution.

Important Note: Using unofficial methods may violate YouTube's terms of service. It's always best to check their guidelines before using any workarounds.

Play YouTube Videos in the Background on Android (Free Method)

This guide will show you how to play YouTube videos in the background on your Android phone, without needing a YouTube Premium subscription. There are some drawbacks to this method compared to Premium, so we'll also briefly discuss that option at the end.

Things you'll need:

  • Android phone
  • YouTube app
  • Web browser (Chrome used in this example)

Steps:

  1. Find a Video:

Open the YouTube app and locate the video you want to play in the background. Browse channels, search for something specific, or explore recommendations – the choice is yours!

  2. Copy the Video URL:

You'll need the video's unique web address to play it outside the app. Tap the "Share" button below the video (either while playing or before starting). In the pop-up menu, choose "Copy link."

  3. Play in Web Browser:

Open your preferred web browser (e.g., Chrome). Paste the copied URL into the address bar and hit enter. The video should load and begin playing.

  4. Switch to Desktop Mode:

To enable background playback, we need the desktop version of the YouTube website. In Chrome, tap the three-dot menu in the top right corner and select "Desktop site." Other browsers may have similar options.

  5. Background Playback Magic:

The YouTube page will reload in desktop mode. Now, switch to your lock screen (press the power button). The video might stop initially, but don't worry! Access the lock screen again, and you should be able to resume playback. Now you can listen to YouTube videos in the background while using other apps or with the screen off!

Important Note: This method utilizes a loophole and may not be a permanent solution. YouTube might change their system in the future, rendering this method ineffective.

YouTube Premium:

For a guaranteed background playback experience, consider subscribing to YouTube Premium. It offers background play, ad-free viewing, video downloads, and access to YouTube Music, all for a monthly fee. There's usually a free trial available, so you can try it out before committing.

Remember: Using unofficial methods might violate YouTube's terms of service. Always check their guidelines before employing any workarounds.
